Moisture Absorption & Hydrolysis

A common failure mode for standard filaments (like PLA or low-grade PETG) at sea is water absorption. Over weeks of exposure to humid fog and spray, the polymer matrix undergoes minor hydrolysis, leading to micro-cracks and sudden tensile failure.

Our printing profiles utilize specialized drying ovens to dry the raw filament spools down to <10% relative humidity before printing. Printing with an enclosed, heated build chamber ensures maximum layer bonding, preventing seawater ingress into the internal infill patterns.
