CSM: 325,000 Miles and a 3D Printer

Collaborating with Clipper Sailing Marine (CSM). Equipping circumnavigating fleets with 3D printers to fabricate onboard replacements.

Clipper Sailing Marine (CSM) manages an active fleet of charter vessels operating globally, logging a combined 325,000 nautical miles annually. In early 2026, 3D3D entered a partnership with CSM to address a recurring logistics issue: fleet down-time due to broken parts in remote locations.

Instead of keeping a massive physical parts warehouse in Europe and shipping components via air freight, we equipped five CSM mother ships with Prusa Core One L printers and access to our digital CAD parts repository.

The Digital Inventory Model

We scanned and modeled the top fifty high-failure components across the CSM fleet — including fresh-water pump housings, slider gates, light brackets, cabinet latches, and navigation tool mounts.

When a part breaks on a vessel operating in the Pacific, the crew accesses the digital inventory, retrieves the optimized STEP file, and prints the replacement in ASA or PA-CF locally.

Results & Carbon Savings

In the first six months of the program, CSM crews printed 142 replacement parts, cutting average vessel repair down-time from nine days to five hours.

By fabricating components on-site, the program eliminated international air shipping for small parts, demonstrating a viable model for sustainable, local maritime logistics.
