Category Zero: Offshore Safety Requirements
Deep-ocean passage compliance. Preparing systems for extreme weather, high-capacity emergency pumps, satellite telemetry, and safety escorts.
World Sailing’s Category 0 guidelines govern extreme offshore passages, such as non-stop circumnavigations or crossings through high-latitude storm zones. These requirements are structural, electrical, and operational.
To comply with Category 0, every boat system must be designed to survive rollover conditions, hull punctures, and total power system dropouts.
Emergency Steering and Hull Integrity
A Category 0 boat must have a secondary steering system that can be deployed within minutes if the primary rudder stock or steering quadrant fails. We tested this on S/V Osprey, engineering a custom transom-mounted cassette rudder sleeve that can be bolted on in under five minutes.
Companionway washboards and structural hatches must have interior and exterior locking mechanisms that remain watertight under pressure, preventing water ingress during knockdowns.
Power & Telemetry Redundancy
Electricity is a survival asset. We require dual charging systems: a primary high-output engine alternator and a secondary hydro-generator deployed over the stern during ocean crossings.
All satellite transceivers, emergency position beacons (EPIRBs), and automatic identification systems (AIS) must have independent backup power channels, ensuring communication channels remain open if the main battery cabin floods.
